About Hair Loss and Topical Compounds
Bald spots and receding hairlines can affect your appearance and self-esteem. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, is a genetic condition that causes chronic hair loss in men and women. Hair loss can occur from many factors, including genetics, autoimmune conditions, medications, anxiety, menopause, hormonal imbalance, pregnancy, and anemia. Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) affects approximately 40% of women by the time they turn 30 (1), and androgenetic alopecia affects approximately 27% of women during their lives. (2) Hair loss can also affect the eyebrows as well. By the age of 30, approximately 30% of men will experience male pattern baldness. (3)
Topical Compounds
Topical compounds can help you preserve your existing hair and improve your hair growth for a thicker, denser, and natural-looking appearance. Minoxidil (Rogaine), a medication originally used for hypertension, is a solution that we can apply directly to the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Most patients receive minoxidil as a topical medication, although it is also available orally by prescription. Minoxidil opens the blood vessels to improve circulation, which can help nourish the hair follicles for significant, lasting growth. The treatment can improve hair growth in multiple areas of the body. Unlike Fin (abbr.), Minoxidil does not address hormonal imbalances or changes to hair growth from DHT. Fin (abbr.) is an oral medication and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blocker–it inhibits the conversion of testosterone into DHT, which can help reduce hair loss and encourage new growth.
Topical Compounds for Men and Women
Maxim topical compounds for men and women optimize the health of your scalp to encourage new hair growth with several key ingredients:
- Caffeine: Improves circulation to prolong the hair growth cycle
- Fin: Reduces DHT levels to address hair loss and support new growth
- Biotin: Improves keratin production for stronger hair
- Minoxidil: Improves blood flow to the scalp
- Regenerative hair-growth peptides: These improve the overall health of the scalp and follicles
The male and female formulas are uniquely designed to target the distinct hormonal differences between men and women, ensuring a more effective approach to hair loss. In addition to the shared core ingredients, each formula includes specific components tailored to the needs of each patient:
Female Topical Formula
The female topical compound contains:
- Estradiol: Prolongs the hair growth phase by helping your body convert androgens into estrogen for hormonal balance
- Cetirizine: Reduces hair shedding and loss
- Fluocinolone: Reduces inflammation and dermatitis that can affect the hair follicles
Male Topical Formula
The male topical formula contains:
- Fin (abbr.): Inhibits DHT for more effective hair growth
- Latanoprost: Increases hair density

Candidates & Consultation
If you are considering additional treatments to ensure a fuller head of hair after a FUE or FUT hair transplant, you are likely a good candidate if you want to:
- Enhance the results of an FUE or FUT hair transplant procedure
- Improve the health of your scalp
- Accelerate your hair growth
- Help preserve non-transplanted hair
- Strengthen your hair follicles.
During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Jezic and our clinical team will examine your scalp and ask about your medical history and lifestyle. Our clinical team will also ask about your aesthetic goals, as they can combine your treatment with other therapies depending on your hair needs. Candidates must have realistic expectations and take good care of their hair and health. You may need to adjust your hair care routine to include looser hairstyles and gentler hair products. You will also need to get adequate rest, exercise regularly, and eat nutritious meals to support healthy hair growth.
Treatment Process
The treatment process for topical hair loss medication is simple. Topical compounds will be applied directly to the scalp and massaged into the scalp. You must make time to consistently use the medication for optimal results. We can provide specific instructions for optimal results and address any questions you have during your consultation.
Results
After consistently treating your scalp with topical hair loss medications, you can enjoy fuller, thicker hair and improved hair density. Our clinical team recommends that you avoid excessive sun exposure that could damage your scalp and affect your results. We can also help you maintain your results with other treatments such as hair restoration, depending on your specific aesthetic goals.
Additional Hair Restoration Treatments
Hybrid Hair Restoration
Many patients address hair loss with hybrid hair restoration, a combination of treatments to encourage new hair growth. Hybrid hair restoration can include hair transplants, medications, and/or regenerative therapy for optimal results. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a treatment that takes healthy hair grafts from one area and places them into another area to address hair loss and enhance your appearance. Unlike older methods of hair restoration that required surgery (follicular unit transplantation), FUE is minimally invasive and can help you strategically address hair loss in multiple areas. We offer several different types of hair restoration procedures to help you address hair loss:
- ATERA: We can harvest and extract hair grafts with an advanced system that removes the grafts with a light-weight handpiece that preserves and lubricates the hair grafts before placing them to help them take root more effectively.
- NeoGraft: We can also remove hair grafts with semi-automated technology to graft them more efficiently with gentle suction.
- Mega-session FUE: We can also transfer a larger number of hair grafts (up to 5,000 grafts during a single hour).
For those that are not good candidates for FUE and need a much larger session despite limited donor tissue or those who’ve had a prior FUT and have a scar, we also offer the Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) procedure, also known as the Strip hair transplant procedure.
Regenerative Therapy
Our clinical team can also administer injections to your scalp to improve your hair growth with growth factors. During the treatment, they will take a blood sample and extract the nutrients from your blood to create a nutrient-rich serum. The treatment increases the number of fibroblasts in your scalp to reduce inflammation. (4,5) Injections are a natural way to stimulate hair growth for lasting results, and they have helped thousands of patients. Other treatments, such as cellular micrografting, can harvest and process hair grafts with a cellular solution for optimal results to address balding areas.
Dr. Jezic and the clinical team also offer Regenera Active, a European regenerative procedure that harvests your own hair tissue from the back of the head and processes it in their system to generate cellular growth factors to be injected into your scalp.
