Installation and maintenance is performed by an on-site team of highly specialized Artas robot technicians. Each component is checked and double checked for the final Houston launch. Several test runs are made at each installation. Every effort is made in order to eliminate the potential for human error in the setup of the ARTAS robot hair transplant system.
3-D imaging is used by the ARTAS’ onboard computer. Red light has been found to help enhance the image capture and accuracy of the hair graft harvesting. The inner components of the harvesting device are protected by a clear shield. No scalpel or needles are used in the harvesting done by the robot. These photos do not show the ultimate coring portion that is much smaller than the guiding handle it sits in.
Although the ARTAS is a state-of-the-art system, it is a continuously improved upon technology with upgrades to both the software and hardware every few months. Precision and accuracy are at impressive levels and patient comfort is unparalleled in many cases.
For over a decade, robots have been used in surgery for safer and more effective outcomes. This includes heart valve surgery, bypass surgeries, prostate surgery, hip surgery, joint surgery, and kidney transplants. Although the technology is available for FUE hair restoration, which has always been considered less invasive than FUT strip-excision procedures, it is a more labor intensive procedure and is more prone to variability in extraction. This also leaves little time for the artistic design and decreased viable time for grafts outside the scalp. Rather than spend a disproportionate amount of time extracting grafts, the image-guided robotic arm, which is programmed with complex algorithms and sensors, enables the ARTAS system to bring great precision and speed in harvesting grafts at the ideal angle and direction. This frees up more time for artistic design to provide the natural look that real hair graft implants can give a patient.
Unlike other FUE approaches, the ARTAS robot also ads a level of comfort. For example, patients are seated in an ergonomically designed surgery chair for harvesting.
